Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China over 3000 years ago. It's use in the U.S. began in the 1970's. It is one of the oldest continuously practiced medical systems in the world. Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions.
It is a holistic form of health care in that it takes into consideration all aspects of a person's
physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being. This ancient medicine involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points located on the surface of the body. The needle stimulation creates and promotes natural healing responses within the body by activating and stimulating one's own natural energy called "Qi" (pronounced "chee").
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), "Qi" is our "Life Energy" and it circulates throughout the body via well-defined pathways called meridians. Each meridian is energetically or electrically connected to specific organs and structures. Where meridians flow, they bring life giving Qi that provides nourishment to every cell, organ, gland, tissue, and muscle in the body. It is believed that a person's health is influenced by the quantity, quality, and balance of Qi. A person's Qi can become disrupted or obstructed by physical or emotional trauma, stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, etc.
When this disruption or imbalance is prolonged, illness, pain, or disease can set in. Acupuncture aims to stimulate and balance the Qi where it has become obstructed. Once this is done and Qi is circulating freely throughout the body, one enjoys an optimal state of health and well-being.
